In the News: Legislature Fails to Give Mayor de Blasio Control of Schools – by Education Next

In New York, the state legislature wrapped up its 2017 session without extending Mayor Bill de Blasio’s control over New York City’s schools.

Marvin Scott reports

Despite his attempt at horse trading, Mayor de Blasio was unable to budge the lawmakers to see things his way — that mayoral control was more beneficial for the city’s 1.1 millions school kids than the old system of school boards.

The sticking point for legislators was charter schools. Senate Majority Leader John Flannagan wanted approval of mayor control in exchange for more charters.

In the Winter 2017 issue of Education Next. Stephen Eide wrote about Mayor de Blasio’s efforts to roll back education reform in New York City.
