PROVO — Bryce Valley didn’t have a single golfer finish in the top six of Wednesday’s 1A state championship on Wednesday at East Bay Golf Course. But, collectively, in cold and difficult conditions, it was better than everyone else.
In just its second year playing competitively in the state meet, Bryce Valley tallied 168 Modified Stableford points to narrowly edge Rich by a single point, as the Rebels finished with 167 points.
The Mustangs finished in seventh place last season.
“It feels really good, these girls have worked hard to do this,” said Bryce Valley coach Karl Roundy. “The girls, they were really enthused about golf this year. They dedicated themselves to it.”
Karleen Roundy was Bryce Valley’s top golfer as she finished with 51 Stableford points, followed by Kayla Atwood’s 50 points. Morgan Syrett finished with 34 points and Mckenna Syrett ended with 25. All five Bryce Valley golfers who competed at state are underclassmen.
The title is even more impressive when you consider that the closest golf course to Bryce Valley is over an hour away in Orderville.
Between region meets on Wednesday, and hitting the ball around on Bryce Valley’s baseball field and into the driving nets more regularly, those five girls made great strides all season to ultimately claim the state title.
For the second straight year, 1A medalist honors went to a golfer from Manila, which also doesn’t have a course nearby. That didn’t stop Manila’s Sylvie Anderson from posting a career round as she broke 100 for the first time in her life, shooting a 97 to finish with 65 Stableford points.
“I think it all went really well, I hit a couple of hazards but I did OK other than that,” said Anderson, who made five pars en route to the state title.
Anderson figured she’d be in contention for medalist honors, and she said her chipping and putting made the difference in the three-stroke win.
Altamont’s Cambry Richins finished second with 62 points, followed by Intermountain Christian’s Jessica Emfinger (61 points), Monticello’s Tymbr Black (58) and Milford’s Bailey Barnes (55 points).
