Clay Harbor was used to being in the public eye far before appearing on The Bachelorette — after all, he was an NFL tight end for nine years. No wonder he’s one of the franchise’s most successful contestants!

In 2010 Clay was drafted to the Philadelphia Eagles and stayed with the team for three years. Then he moved to the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he played for another three years. Clay signed with the New England Patriots in 2016 but was cut shortly into the season. That’s when he was picked up by the Detroit Lions.

In 2017 he signed with the New Orleans Saints but was placed on injured reserve a few months later until February 2018. A month after that, he was declared a free agent. So, as of right now, Clay isn’t signed with any team. However, he’s made it clear that he isn’t done with his football career.

Clay’s time on The Bachelorette was cut short due to a group date gone wrong. The men were competing in a football game (irony much?) when Clay made a touchdown. However, it became apparent that he hurt his wrist, and he was checked out by a medic on the scene. He still made the effort to see Becca that evening and, with his wrist wrapped and his arm in a sling, decided to deal with the situation the next day. The two were building a connection, and Becca gave Clay the group date’s rose.

However, Clay was hit with some rough news at the doctor the following day. His wrist was seriously hurt and needed surgery. It was a tough decision for Clay because he had something special with Becca, but he isn’t done with his NFL career and needed to take care of his injury.

Ultimately, Clay gave back his rose and had a tearful goodbye with Becca. While it’s a bummer that he had to leave, at least he went out playing the sport he loves, right? Plus, there’s always Paradise . . .
