2020 Election Memes Are Taking Over the Internet

As the United States awaits the presidential election results, the internet is doing what it does best in times of intense uncertainty and stress: make 2020 election memes.

As of Thursday afternoon, November 5, many key states — Georgia, Nevada, and Pennsylvania, notably — were still counting this year’s surge of mail-in ballots, leading people to turn to simpler times as a way of coping with the current reality. Much like we’ve seen people revert to their teenage selves during the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. presidential election has inspired people to walk down memory lane for joke fodder.

Memes have long since proven to be an outlet for stress and given the extremely close race after a nightmare year, everyone is feeling a little on edge. Below, check out the memes and jokes proving popular on the internet this week.

The movie and book references (past and present) are endless

Amid the confusion caused by delayed counts and Trump’s assertions to stop counting altogether, folks are channeling their feelings into something that feels familiar: niche references to ‘90s and 2000s pop culture, eras that we (regrettably) took for granted.

From Twilight to The Notebook to Brian McKnight’s iconic 1999 hit “Back at One,” people are tapping into nostalgia for all kinds of 2020 election memes. As people have taken to saying, it does feel like 2020 exists in some bizarre Twilight Zone episode where nothing makes sense and everything is seemingly bad. Unlike a movie, it’s impossible to skip ahead to the ending, but that doesn’t mean we can’t put our feelings through some well-crafted edits to cinematic history.

Celebrities are fair game, too

If there’s one thing that will stand against the test of time, it’s the Jason Derulo falling meme. When everything is so uncertain, it does feel reassuring to know that somewhere, someone will photoshop the Cats star into the present. Other celebs aren’t exempt from jokes either — with a classic Jonas Brothers reference proving apt for the “can y’all even name the three branches of government” meme. Even if the world is getting progressively tired of celebrities, it’s nice to know we can still rely on them for some pop culture fun.

And we can’t forget America’s Next Top Model

It makes for a certain type of irony that as one former reality star is trying to steal the office, many of us are remembering the days when we only crowded around the TV to see who was going to be America’s Top Next Model. The show has provided ample inspiration for many meme-makers.

May the memes never end…

While experts do recommend taking a break from social media, it’s understandable why so many of us are doing the opposite as the waiting has stretched into days. But if you are spending your day scrolling through your phone, at least memes are preferable to doomscrolling.
