BOSTON — The Red Sox are close to deciding on their next manager and the expectation is that it will either be Alex Cora or Sam Fuld, two sources told MLB.com.

The decision could come as early as Friday.

MLB Network contributor Jon Heyman was first to report on Thursday that Cora and Fuld appeared to be the two finalists.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said from the beginning that he would not comment on any of the team’s managerial candidates until the search is complete, and he has stayed true to that.

It is an interesting choice between an experienced candidate in Cora, who already managed the Red Sox to a World Series title two years ago and Fuld, a New Hampshire native who is among the bright young minds in the game but has never managed.

Both candidates are comfortable with analytics — which is definitely important to Bloom.

As recently as a couple of days ago, there were five finalists, a group that also included three bench coaches — Miami’s James Rowson, Pittsburgh’s Don Kelly and Carlos Mendoza from the Yankees.

Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, citing a source, reported that Kelly and Mendoza were both informed they are out of the mix.

Speculation has persisted for months that Cora — who had a mutual parting of ways with the Red Sox in January due to his involvement in the Houston Astros’ sign-stealing scandal — could reclaim his job in Boston once his suspension expired after the World Series.

Three days after the Dodgers defeated the Rays in Game 6, Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom and general manager Brian O’Halloran flew to Puerto Rico to speak with Cora.

The club has also remained engaged with the 38-year-old Fuld, who is currently the director of integrative baseball performance for the Phillies.

Bloom has a strong relationship with Fuld dating back to when the former outfielder played with the Rays from 2011-13.

When Bloom was hired away from the Tampa Bay to run Boston’s front office last October, he worked with Cora for more than two months in the offseason.

But that all changed in January when MLB released the investigation involving the Astros’ improper use of technology to decode opposing signs and Cora was named as a central figure in the scheme.

Cora was bench coach for the Astros for one season, in 2017.

The Red Sox hired Cora as John Farrell’s successor and he led the club to a franchise-record 108 wins in 2018, culminating with a dominant October and a World Series championship.

Boston didn’t perform as well for Cora in 2019, going 84-78 and missing the playoffs.

The news of Cora’s departure from the Red Sox hit several key players hard, including Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers, Christian Vázquez, Eduardo Rodriguez and J.D. Martinez.

Ron Roenicke was elevated from bench coach to replace Cora as manager, and the Sox finished 24-36 in the shortened season.

The Red Sox announced on the final day of the season that Roenicke — who was on a one-year contract — would not return as manager.

Speculation that Cora, 45, might come back increased on Oct. 12, when the Red Sox announced that all members of the coaching staff were invited to return next season with the exception of bullpen coach Craig Bjornson and bench coach Jerry Narron, the latter of whom was brought in by Roenicke.

All of the returning coaches either worked with Cora in 2018-19, or were hired by him in the weeks following the ’19 season.

In the very near future, the Red Sox will decide if they are bringing the band back together with Cora or starting fresh with Fuld.
