For queer kids who grew up playing with dolls, it comes as no surprise that many on social media are claiming Barbie has a girlfriend. But who exactly is this mysterious sapphic love? It’s none other than Aimee Song.
Photos from 2017 of Barbie and a doll in Aimee Song’s likeness wearing “Love Wins” t-shirts are circulating on social media, prompting many to wonder how we missed Barbie coming out as queer. The pictures show the pair petting a dog, eating avocado toast, and gazing longingly into one another’s eyes. While some on social are wondering how Barbie snagged a girlfriend before them, or when exactly she came out, Aimee Song weighed in to make the relationship Twitter-official.
“I am the girlfriend,” Aimee tweeted, alongside a photo of herself and her Barbie likeness wearing her “Love Wins” t-shirts.
Just for the record, Barbie creator Mattel has not officially said Barbie is a lesbian, and Instagram posts about the Love Wins Barbies from when they came out seem to indicate the two are allies. But, the beauty of Barbie is that she is whoever you want her to be — so let us dream.
Some on social media are wondering why others are so surprised Barbie might be gay, given her aesthetic in the show Barbie and the Diamond Castle, while others are claiming Barbie is more likely bisexual given her longterm relationship with Ken and her bisexual bob. If enough people believe Barbie is queer it automatically becomes cannon, right?
Whatever Barbie’s actual identity is beside the point. For the many rejoicing on Twitter, and those of us who used our Barbies to play out sapphic dreams when we were younger, we’re walking just a little taller today.
