Canada stayed perfect at the 2021 world juniors, earning a top spot in Group A with a 4-1 victory over Finland on New Year’s Eve.
The contest wasn’t nearly as close as the scoreboard indicates, with Canada outshooting its opponent 39-19, including a 17-1 edge in the first period.
The Canadians started hot, as captain and tournament-leading scorer Dylan Cozens buried the opening goal less than four minutes into the game. Cozens later added an empty-netter, while Dylan Holloway and Peyton Krebs provided Canada’s two other markers.
Despite the positive result, Canada’s night wasn’t without some worry, as forward Alex Newhook left the game with an upper-body injury and didn’t return. There’s no word yet on his status.
Brad Lambert scored for Finland on the power play in the third period to snap Devon Levi’s shutout bid.
Canada will take on the Czech Republic in its quarterfinal matchup on Saturday. The Czech’s finished 2-2 in round-robin play.
