Joe Freshgoods on NBA All-Star New Balance Pop-Up in Chicago

The temperatures are in single digits right now in Chicago. There’s snow and ice on the ground. Yet a substantial lineup still formed overnight in front of 2358 North Damen Avenue in Chicago, 12 hours before the doors would even open to the public. The line was for the release of the DON’T BE MAD x New Balance collection, the latest work from local Windy City designer Joe “Freshgoods” Robinson.

And if you want anything from the collection, you have to be in Chicago to get it. Unlike most popular sneaker and apparel releases that are released globally around the same time, Robinson maintains he’s only selling the collection in Chicago. He tweeted, “And y’all asking me why I choose to release to Chicago first. Is you dumb or stupid?”

“If you don’t get them, you don’t get them,” says Robinson. “It’s fucking New Balance. We’re not dropping 80,000 pairs of shoes. If you want to do that, go find another brand. This is American made with Horween leather. It’s an All-Star Weekend exclusive drop and it’s true to Chicago. I think it’s pretty boss to be able to drop your first shoe, make it a Chicago-only thing because you wanted it to be.”

Once again, Robinson is forcing the industry to meet him where he is. He’s built up his Don’t Be Mad line independently, outside of New York and Los Angeles, and without any wholesale partnerships—he travels the country hosting pop-up shops in major cities and aligns them with events like Rolling Loud or previously, when he couldn’t get floor space in 2018, ComplexCon.

This weekend not only marks the collection launch, which coencides with NBA All-Star Weekend, but the opening of Robinson’s brand new space in the city, a secondary experience to the Fat Tiger Workshop storefront, a shop he runs with his creative collective that includes Rello Jones, Victor Pitre, and Des Owusu. Joe compares it to the Wu-Tang Clan saying, “We own it together, but we all have our own projects going on.”

While this new location will not operate as a traditional brick and mortar space, meaning it will not always be shoppable, Robinson says that it will be home to plenty more installations for his solo projects in the future. It will also act as an outlet for local creatives. He plans on holding an ongoing JFG Talks, a series designed to push organic conversation forward in the community.

“I wanted to have a space that allows me to just breathe a little bit. That’s me partnering with New Balance. I like how different they are right now, the space they hold. So with me, being a true Chicago kid, I wanted a spot that was kind of off the beaten path but still around everything so I can create my own energy.”

This particular version of the space has been built out to resemble what Freshgoods describes as “Cupid’s Man Cave,” a subtle nod to Valentine’s Day, which happened to fall on the same day as the store opening. He announced his partnership with New Balance by posting a picture of his hand adorned with an NB diamond encrussted pinkie ring to Instagram and a caption that read, “It’s been a lot of courting and a few bad break ups with exes, but today I said yes.” Pastel pink walls bear large neon signage marking the collection. Other walls in the space are covered with colorful abstract artwork to offset pink lockers and mirrors designed to look like basketball backboards that display apparel and sneakers. Hardwood floor paneling, another obvious nod to basketball, are emblazoned with custom “DBM” logos. Marble floors achieve a more luxurious feel.

“I wanted to show that you don’t need to have a billion dollar build out and X amount of this and that to make noise and I think I proved that,” he tells Complex. “I’m all about shifting energy and I think sometimes it’s kind of cool because that ultimately helps a resume when you’re able to show that you know do that.”

Robinson’s new store came partially out of necessity. Fat Tiger Workshop’s 836 North Milwaukee Avenue shop is currently built out to market the creative conglomerate’s four-shoe project with Adidas. Both collaborations have received a lot of buzz in Chicago, steering attention away from some of the other larger projects going on this weekend.

“My whole career right now is an ‘I Told You So’ moment.’ Every time there’s a big event [in Chicago], I fucked everybody up. ComplexCon, I fucked everybody up. All-Star Weekend I’m going to fuck everybody up. I love performing in front of a crowd, especially if it’s in my backyard,” says Robinson. “It feels really good because a lot of these brands spend millions of dollars on these mini moments and it don’t take that much money to win over a crowd in your community. When you got the juice, you just got the juice organically. I think sometimes people try to pay for the juice and it’s just like, shit going to be spoiled. You got people walking around with deep dish pizza hats. We don’t wear that shit. We don’t even eat deep dish pizza. That’s obviously somebody that’s not tapped into Chicago culture.”

With all of the energy surrounding Robinson’s experience this week, he says he still maintains an underdog mentality when it comes to his work. Even with a proven track record, he still just wants to be that guy from Chicago.

“It feels good being able to stay real and teach that up and coming next generation like, ‘Yo, I don’t got to do too much to win.’ I can still live in Chicago. I can still be myself. I can still party. I don’t got to be in a mansion somewhere. People love when real people win and I’m just a real person,” he says. “I still love just being a regular Chicago guy. I see a lot of people that change, get a little fame and they become a whole different person. I can’t really change up. I’m this way. You either love it or you don’t.”

Miley Cyrus Struts the Marc Jacobs F/W20 Runway in New York

Photography via IMAXTREE

Here’s what had people talking.

Miley Cyrus walks the Marc Jacobs F/W20 show in New York

Miley Cyrus was quite the surprise guest at the Marc Jacobs F/W20 show in New York this week—mostly because she wasn’t sitting on the front row. Instead, Cyrus strutted the runway amongst the models. While her runway cameo came as a surprise, the star has been a muse for the label for years, from being a 2014 campaign star to collaborating on a capsule collection with the New York designer just last year. The highly anticipated show, featuring the fashion label’s latest collection, was fitting for Cyrus’s own style. She donned a black bra top, wide-legged pants, a zebra-print jacket and black leather gloves. Cyrus described her runway ensemble on Instagram as a “genius design and execution.” And according to acclaimed runway supermodel Naomi Campbell, Cyrus herself had success in execution. Campbell commented “🔥🔥🔥” on Cyrus’s Instagram post. Hailey Bieber also gave her social media applause to Cyrus’s Fashion Week debut, commenting: “YUP. STOMP QUEEN.💕”

Canadian Mental Health Association launches apparel line to raise funds and awareness for mental health

CMHA
Photography by Tishan Baldeo

This week the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) dropped an apparel line, Mental Fatigues, which illustrates the human tendency to hide mental health issues. The CMHA teamed up with creative agency TAXI Toronto and Toronto-based artist Ka-Young Lee for the project. The result: camouflage motifs covering three different T-shirts, and if you look closely, you’ll see human figures hidden amongst the print. “The Mental Fatigues apparel line illustrates an important insight about our mental health: when we camouflage our struggles, we hide from the help we need,” says Margaret Eaton, national CEO of CMHA. “CMHA welcomes the support provided through this imaginative campaign.” The collection consists of three different colourways, each symbolic of a key issue in Canadian mental health: anxiety disorder, substance use disorder and workplace mental health. And while all proceeds from Mental Fatigues will go toward the CMHA to help fund advocacy, resources and programs for mental health assistance, sparking conversation is a large part of what this line aims to do. “It’s more important than ever to be talking about mental health,” says Alexis Bronstorph, co-executive creative Director at TAXI Toronto. “We challenged ourselves to find a creative way to encourage that open dialogue.” Shop the collection at mentalfatigues.ca.

Face masks are the must-have accessory amid coronavirus panic

Virus protection — but make it fashion.

The hottest accessory at London fashion week isn’t a Barbie-sized purse, but fashionable face masks amid widespread panic over coronavirus.

Though fabric face masks can’t exactly help prevent the spread of the virus, it hasn’t stopped stylish denizens from wearing them to shows anyway.

But these aren’t your ordinary face masks of the surgical hospital variety. The fashion flock is putting their own spin on the accessory with adornments to show off a bit of personality. One attendee outside the British Fashion Council (BFC) Show Space show wore one decorated with arrows, while a pair of women donned pastel-hued versions.

The BFC expects attendance at London fashion week to go down this year due to coronavirus, reports Reuters. Chinese designer Yuhan Wang opened LFW, but tells Reuters she had to cut down on looks because of delays caused by the virus. Six Chinese brands have canceled shows at Paris fashion week, Women’s Wear Daily reports, and upcoming fashion weeks in Beijing and Shanghai that were slated for March have been postponed.

London isn’t the first city where face masks have become the trending accessory. Several New York Fashion Week attendees covered their mouths last week, including stylist Marina Ingvarsson who wore a minimal black face mask outside the Michael Kors show. The trend was just as prevalent during NYFW in 2018 over flu concerns.

The streets aren’t the only place face masks have been popping up. Designers Phillipe and David Blond featured plenty of them during their Monday runway show for the Blonds, including bedazzled, bejeweled and feathered renditions. Blancore’s Yalan Li also included one made out of white mesh during her show.

In New York, face masks have become hard to come by, too. Most shops have reported selling out of plain surgical masks as of January following the rise of coronavirus cases stateside. Prices have also skyrocketed at online stores such as Amazon as shoppers even scoop up masks for their pets.

In China, where coronavirus originated, over 5,000 new cases were confirmed in a single day, according to officials. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the total cases of the deadly illness in the US is now at 15 as of Thursday.

Drake’s New Watch Has a Fully Functional Roulette Wheel

Welcome to Watches of the Week, where we’ll track the rarest, wildest, and most covetable watches spotted on celebrities.

Some watches track the moon’s phase; others ding on the hour. Drake’s watches have complications, too, the more modern the better: remember the one that makes a Sexy Mad Lib at the push of a button? It was clear that more of the same was imminent last week when Drake posted pictures of himself hanging out with the watch world’s King of Excess, Jacob Arabo. We didn’t have to wait long to see the fruit of Drake’s shopping trip: this week he wore a Jacob & Co. Astronomia Casino: a watch that contains a functional roulette wheel and a ceramic white ball that skitters around it. Because who needs to know what phase the moon is in when you can do some light wrist gambling? Also this week, Tom Holland’s finds his niche and we find out what watch a Super Bowl MVP wears.

Joe Schildhorn/BFA.com

Drake’s Jacob & Co. Astronomia Casino

You know that feeling when you’re hanging with your boys you’re struck by the urge to get in a quick game of roulette? No? Well, maybe that’s because you don’t have Drake’s new Casino watch, which trades out a watch’s dial for a roulette table. What time is it? Game time. Jacob & Co. is known for making watches that show excavator trucks and oil pumps in motion, and ones that play the entire theme song from The Godfather. Drake’s is somehow the most complicated of the bunch. Take a look at it in motion below.

Getty Images

A$AP Rocky’s Jacob & Co. Five Time Zone

When it rains Jacob & Co. watches, it pours, apparently. A$AP Rocky was seen wearing the brand’s multi-colored Five Time Zone watch. And while it doesn’t set you up to play an impromptu round of roulette wherever and whenever, the watch can tell Rocky the hour and minute in New York, Tokyo, Paris, Los Angeles, plus wherever he happens to be at the time.

Tom Holland’s Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5168G-001

When you’re a watch collector, it’s important to have a thing. Drake has his, and it appears Tom Holland is honing in on his own obsession. After spending much of last year’s Spider-Man press tour wearing the chocolate-brown Patek Philippe Aquanaut, Holland is sticking with what works for him. It appears Holland got himself another Aquanaut, this time in white gold with a pretty navy-blue dial. While most collectors are after another Patek—the brand’s Nautilus is maybe the most in-demand luxury timepiece in existence—Holland is going in a different direction.

Patrick Mahomes’s Rolex Yacht-Master 40

Patrick Mahomes: you just won the Super Bowl! What watch are you going to wear now? Naturally, the answer is a Rolex. During the Kansas City Chiefs’ victory parade, Mahomes wore the Yacht-Master, Rolex’s watch made for skippers and captains. Mahomes’s comes in rose gold with a rubber bracelet, which is built to handle a brackish sea, but can just as easily handle spilt beer and popped champagne.

Andrew D. Bernstein

Chris Tucker’s Rolex Deapsea

The Rolex Deepsea was built for the kind of bottom-of-the-ocean exploration that got Jules Verne all hopped up: the standard model of the watch can travel 12,800 feet underwater. And in 2014, to celebrate director James Cameron’s dive all the way to the depths of the ocean (35,787 feet below, to be precise, with the use of a specially-built Rolex), the brand released a special-edition Deepsea with a “D-blue” dial. Appropriately, the dial is ocean-floor black on the bottom, and eases into sea-blue on the top half. Chris Tucker wore the watch to a Lakers game.

Helen Lasichanh’s Richard Mille RM 37-01 Automatic “Kiwi”

In this house , they wear Richard Mille. Late last year, Pharrell released his very own collaborative watch with Richard Mille, and now wearing the brand is a family affair. Pharrell’s wife Helen Lasichanh wore a piece from the brand’s sweet Bonbon collection. The “Kiwi” edition on Lasichanh’s wrist features a green rubber strap inspired by the fruit’s meat and dancing pieces of citrus on the dial.

Fe Noel Took Us to Grenada to Close Out New York Fashion Week 2020

A runway show is no easy feat, but Brooklyn-based, Grenada-born designer Felisha Noel gracefully made her presence known at New York Fashion Week 2020. Noel closed out the week with her brand Fe Noel, transporting her guests to Grenada.

Although this was her debut show, Noel has previously shown collections in collaboration with Harlem’s Fashion Row during Fashion Week, and her designs have already been worn by the likes of Beyoncé and Michelle Obama. Over the years, Noel has cultivated a major group of supporters and fans of the brand, many of whom were present at the show. Guests trickled in with excitement as the sounds of crashing ocean waves played and a screen displaying palm trees and beaches was shown on the runway.

The start of the show was unlike any other. There was a celebratory spirit that lived in the room that not many shows have. The show started with a short film, which introduced the audience to a bit of Grenadian tradition and the collection, “Daughter of the Soil.”

“In this video, we are using #JabJab culture as an artistic expression and metaphor to represent freedom and the struggle you endure on the path to becoming your true self,” Noel explained in an Instagram caption. “It’s the struggle of all of us discovering ourselves and what we are made of and the beauty that is birthed in spite of.”

Daughter of the Soil is a tribute to becoming your authentic self, one that makes the ancestors proud. It was a chilling film to watch, but it set the tone for the show, and everyone knew from the get-go we were in for a celebration of Grenadian culture.

From the signature Fe Noel wide-leg pants adorned with colorful stripes to plaid co-ord sets and romantic silk dresses, the entire collection was art. It was colorful, feminine, and expressive. The robes in the collection were vibrant, with printed patterns that left you eager to visit the islands. There were dreamy sheer fabrics, mint plaids, and vibrant reds that all payed homage to Noel’s roots. Just by seeing the clothes and its craftsmanship, you could feel how proud she was of her ancestry through the designs.

The hairstyles for the show were as carefully crafted as the garments. Some models donned their natural short cuts, while others rocked two straight-back, long cornrows. Naeemah Lafond, the hairstylist for the show, said the “spiked braid” style was “born on the beach in Grenada last year.” These hairstyles were the perfect touch — reminiscent of the messy, salty hair a few days into a vacation. It may be unruly, but when paired with the right garbs, it can look phenomenal.

The final look was a flirty yet vibrant lime green ruched maxidress that garnered immediate applause. I’m almost certain that everyone who left the show was ready to jet off to an island to experience Caribbean pride.

If you’re in the market for some eye-catching, feminine looks, the collection is already available to shop on fenoel.com. If you’re ready to hit the islands (even in spirit), you can shop the best looks from the runway, here:

2Pac Estate Drops ‘Me Against the World’ 25th Anniversary Merch

The Estate of Tupac Shakur celebrates 25 years of Me Against the World with a new range of exclusive merch.

The release includes vinyl copies of Pac’s critically acclaimed third studio album, which he recorded at 23 years old while facing a prison sentence. Critics have called MATW one of Pac’s and hip-hop’s greatest works, praising its emotionally charged, honest cuts that oscillated between angry and vulnerable.

Me Against the World was really to show people that this is an art to me. That I do take it like that. And whatever mistakes I make, I make out of ignorance, not out of disrespect to music or the art,” he said about the project while behind bars. “So Me Against the World was deep, reflective. It was like a blues record. It was down-home. It was all my fears, all the things I just couldn’t sleep about. Everybody thought that I was living so well and doing so good that I wanted to explain it. And it took a whole album to get it all out. It’s explaining my lifestyle, who I am, my upbringing and everything. It talks about the streets but talks about it in a different light. There’s a song on there dedicated to mothers, just a song I wrote just for my mother. And it digs deeper like that. I just wanted to do something for all mothers. I’m proud of that song. It affected a lot of people.”

The 25th anniversary merch also includes three graphic tees and a pullover hoodie with the album’s tracklist emblazoned on the back. The items, which range between $30 to $96, are available at Pac’s online store for pre-order. Products are expected to ship next month.
