Paris Men’s and Couture Fashion Weeks Have Been Canceled Amid COVID-19 Concerns

Paris Fashion Week Menswear and Haute Couture Week have been canceled.

According to Business of Fashion, which does not specifically mention ongoing COVID-19 containment efforts, the board of directors of the Fédération de la haute couture et de la Mode made the announcement Friday. Per the report, “alternatives” of some sort for both events are currently in the works.

PFW Menswear was set for June 23 to June 28, while Haute Couture Week was slated for July 2 to July 9.

Additional info on the announcement-teased “alternative” plans is expected to be unveiled soon.

The National Chamber of Italian Fashion also announced Milano Fashion Week Men’s will not take place between June 19-23, as originally planned. Instead, the menswear shows will be presented during Milan’s womenswear week in September. Similar to Paris organizers, the Italian non-profit said it was working on “digital alternatives” that would be shown during the original June dates; this will ensure the buying schedule would not be disturbed.

“We are aware that great efforts will be made in order to have the new collections ready by June to start an innovative selling campaign,” the statement read. “The 800 Milan showrooms will have an active part in this new storytelling.”

The fashion industry, like many other business sectors, has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic. Large department stores—such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and Selfridges—have been forced to closed, while the CFDA Awards, Met Gala, and other high-profile fashion events have been postponed until further notice.

“I know that we will get through COVID-19, but on the other side more challenges await—not the least of which is grappling with our ongoing climate crisis,” Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour wrote. “One day that will not arrive on schedule will be the opening of the Costume Institute’s exhibition, About Time. Due to the unavoidable and responsible decision by the Metropolitan Museum to close its doors, About Time, and the opening night gala, will not take place on the date scheduled. In the meantime, we will give you a preview of this extraordinary exhibition in our forthcoming May issue.”

Lapstone & Hammer x Saucony Courageous Moc Two Rivers Drops Tomorrow • KicksOnFire.com

Philadelphia sneaker boutique Lapstone & Hammer will be dropping their first sneaker collaboration tomorrow with the arrival of the Lapstone & Hammer x Saucony Courageous Moc “Two Rivers.” The two brands with Philadelphia roots come together for a special collaboration inspired by the origins of Saucony’s name (derived from the Native American Lenape word “saconk”, which translates to “where two rivers run together”), seeks to connect Lapstone and Saucony like two rivers running together to form a more dynamic force.

Lapstone & Hammer has transformed one of Saucony’s heritage running silhouettes, the Courageous, into a brand new model: the Courageous Moc. The addition of a handmade whip-stitched moc toe is the centerpiece of the design, giving this shoe the distinction of being the first hand-stitched Saucony in decades.

That level of personal care and attention to detail extends through the rest of the model’s construction, which includes a mix of premium silkee and mammoth suedes, and goat and Horween leathers that make up the upper; a calfskin leather lining; a sherpa-lined tongue; a cork and EVA co-molded midsole and a sharktooth ripple gum rubber outsole. Additional details include Lapstone & Hammer branding on the woven tongue label and insole, while each pair comes with two lace options – rawhide leather and tonal flat waxed cotton – as well as both tonal and accent colored lace toggles.

In addition to the shoes, the “Two Rivers” capsule will also feature a special in-house made in Philadelphia apparel collection. The sportswear-focused range consists of a sherpa hoodie and short set in oatmeal and graphite, each featuring a cognac leather patch embossed with a Lapstone logo; a hoodie and cargo pant that are 100% cotton French terry, and have each been “marble-dyed” by hand in olive and indigo and feature an embroidered Lapstone logo; and a 100% cotton, garment-dyed tee in sand and bone, emblazoned with “Two Rivers” and “Run Together” prints on the front and back. All of these pieces were made in Philadelphia, and the “marble-dyed” hoodie and pants were hand dyed at Lapstone’s in-house facility.

The Lapstone & Hammer x Saucony Courageous Moc “Two Rivers” will release on Saturday, March 28th @ 10:00am EST only online at lapstoneandhammer.com in two colorways for $150 each: Bone White and Black Sand. Louis Vuitton, Dior, and More Luxury Brands Are Boarding Up Shops Amid Coronavirus Closure

As temporary store closures and limited retail options persist amid sustained COVID-19 containment concerns, several luxury brands have started boarding up their shops in New York.

With foot traffic having screeched to a halt, brands including Louis Vuitton and Dior have boarded up their respective storefronts. Jimmy Choo, Fendi, Sephora, and others have instituted similar measures.

Executive director of the Soho Broadway Initiative business improvement district Mark Dicus told retail shops and landlords earlier this month that boarding up windows and storefronts should be avoided in favor of different methods of protection.

In a statement to the Real Deal this week, Dicus explained his reasoning.

“We’re encouraging property owners and retailers to keep those storefronts untouched and to keep the lights on at night,” Dicus said on Tuesday. “We want to maintain a sense of normalcy and make sure our neighborhoods are safe. We feel there are ways to take care of that without resorting to drastic measures like boarding up storefronts.”

Earlier this month, a fleet of brands including Supreme and Steve Madden announced store closures across the country as COVID-19 containment efforts ramped up in metropolitan areas.

On Thursday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said 100 residents had died due to the virus in the past 24 hours. Also within the last 24 hours, more than 3,700 people tested positive in NYC. That brings the city’s total number of cases to over 21,000.

Lil Baby Flaunts New 1017 Chain

Even in the midst of a quarantine, Lil Baby received a special delivery from Gucci Mane: a brand new 1017 chain.

Lil Baby shared a video of the completely iced-out necklace on Instagram, rhetorically asking his followers, “How The Fucc You Get A 1017 Ain’t You 4PF,” a reference to his imprint 4 Pockets Full.

Gucci has been actively signing new artists to 1017 Records, including the Atlanta native Ola Runt. Lil Baby shouts out both artists, writing, “Of Course Crazyyy You Kno @laflare1017 My Big Bro … preciate it vato @1olarunt Let’s Goooo #realatlanta.”

Gucci commented on the photo, “U saved the city Vato.” In a second comment, he wrote, “Hittttinnn.”

Lil Baby has also been working on his 4PF imprint. Last year, he signed Detroit emcee 42 Dugg to the label, in a joint venture with Yo Gotti’s Collective Music Group. Earlier this month, Dugg revealed that his project Young and Turnt 2 will arrive on March 27 via both labels, and include features from Lil Baby, Gotti, and Babyface Ray.

Gore-Tex Responds to Rumors That Its Product Will Protect You From Coronavirus

Rumors that Gore-Tex—a waterproof and breathable fabric—can prevent you from catching coronavirus have been thriving online. While some of the reasoning about its effectiveness makes sense, the company has issued a press release stating otherwise.

“Gore has received many requests and would like to emphasize that Gore-Tex materials are not designed and engineered to provide sufficient airflow to support human respiration when used for ‘Do It Yourself’ (DIY) Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) products (including face masks) and have not been proven to be a viable option to protect against COVID-19,” the statement reads.

It continued, “GORE-TEX materials, and any end products made out of them including garments and gloves, DO NOT protect against airborne pathogens primarily acting through the respiratory tract, such as COVID-19.”

The company wrote that its fabrics division does supply products for first responders and those who are at the front lines of the global pandemic. It added that it’s aware of the shortage of PPE products that health care workers need, and the company is looking into how it can “contribute to both short and long-term solutions in the fight against COVID-19.”

Some have been claiming that Gore-Tex could thwart off the infection. While it seems people might be making these comments in jest, there are articles that suggest that Gore-Tex could be a suitable fabric to produce DIY face masks—and Gore-Tex does have medical applications

This week, one Twitter user even cited two points as to how the material could be preventative.

He first quoted Business Insider, which wrote, “When worn correctly, N95 respirators block out at least 95% of small airborne particles. So the respirators can filter out some droplets carrying coronavirus. The coronavirus itself measures between .05 and 0.2 microns in diameter, according to a recent article in The Lancet.”

He also shared information on the structure of Gore-Tex from Cameo, an online encyclopedia: “GORE-TEX has pore sizes of up to 0.2 micrometers. It is impermeable to any liquid such as water, solvents, acids, alkalis, bleaches, insecticides as well as bacteria, and viruses.”
