Chloe x Halle’s “Do It” Song Lyrics Explained

Chloe x Halle are performing at the BET Awards this Sunday, and if their new single “Do It” isn’t already your favorite song of the summer, it should be because it’s essentially perfection, sooo. The single, off their new album Ungodly Hour, is produced by Scott Storch and cowritten by Victoria Monét and has a super-nostalgic early aughts feel—which was fully intentional. “We wanted this album to feel fun and flirty but also grunge, in a way, and a little dark and mysterious and sexy,” Chloe recently told High Snobiety. “And I really feel like ’90s production with beautiful melodies on top truly embodied that.”

Since you’ll be singing “Do It” in the shower, at work (aka on your couch), and in the car for the foreseeable future, you might as well get to know the lyrics a little better.

What Chloe x Halle Have Said About the Song

A lot of thought and intention went into the lyrics for “Do It,” and Chloe x Halle opened up about the meaning behind certain moments in an interview with Genius, which you truly need to watch:

Chloe revealed that one of her favorite lines is, “That wig secure like the money in our safe,” elaborating that “we’re working hard as young women, securing our future in the bag by doing something we love, which is music, so it was really fun singing those lyrics.”

And when it comes to the hook, Halle says they were “envisioning us on the dance floor with our girls like that’s just how we do it, that’s just how you do it. That’s just how you do that. And you’re doing it well. Like, that’s all that was in our head.”

Meanwhile, the lyric “He say, ‘Where you from?’ Tell ’em, ‘Outer space’” is a reference to Chloe x Halle meeting men who aren’t on their level. “We have to meet someone like a really cool guy who’s on the same level intellectually as us,” Chloe said. “And it’s always fun to kinda tease him and be like, ‘I’m from outer space, boy, don’t you know you can’t just come over to me like that, you gotta elevate your game a little bit.’”

Ultimately, though, the message of this song is quite literally good vibes only. “I just want people to take away good vibes and healing,” Halle told MTV. “At the end of the day, that’s what music is about. It’s about lifting spirits and making somebody feel good.”

Time to Memorize the Full Lyrics

Here they are, just in time for you to sing and dance along to during the BET Awards, courtesy of Genius. Très convenient.

Yeah, I beat my face
Movin’ fast ’cause the Uber on the way
Takin’ pictures, make sure you can’t see no lace
That wig secure like the money in our safe
I look like bae
Now I’m on the way
Let you know when I’m ’bout a mile away
When I’m outside, please don’t make me wait
The party startin’ when we pull up to the gate
Girl, we so late

I’m just with the crew
We ain’t out here lookin’ for boo
’Cause some nights be better with you
It’s a homies-only kind of mood
And tonight we on a hundred
One hundred
No drama, no baby mamas, keepin’ it cute

Ooh, ooh
That’s just what I do, do, do
And that’s just how we do it, do it, do it
Yeah, that’s just how we do it, do it, do it
You liking what I do? Do you?
Know how to keep it cool, ooh, ooh
And that’s just how we do it
Yeah, that’s just how we do it
And you could do it too, ooh, ooh, ooh

No complaints
Left the heels at home, I’m on my sneaker game (sneaker game)
He say, “Where you from?” Tell ’em, “Outer space” (outer space)
’Cause a bag the only thing I’m tryna chase (tryna chase)
I’m MIA (MIA)
Just tell the DJ press play, rewind, keep it on repeat
Tiptoe round a hater, I’m light on my feet
That’s how you do it, keep stuntin’ on your enemies
Good vibes only

I’m just with the crew
We ain’t out here looking for boo
’Cause some nights be better with you
It’s a homies-only kind of mood
And tonight, we on a hundred
One hundred
No drama, no baby mamas, keepin’ it cute

Ooh, ooh
That’s just what I do, do, do
And that’s just how we do it, do it, do it
Yeah, that’s just how we do it, do it, do it
You liking what I do? Do you? (That’s just how we do it)
Know how to keep it cool, ooh, ooh (that’s just how we do it)
And that’s just how we do it
Yeah, that’s just how we do it (that’s just how we do it)
And you could do it too, ooh, ooh, ooh (that’s just how we do it)

Ooh, ooh
That’s just what I do, do, do
And that’s just how we do it, do it, do it
Yeah, that’s just how we do it, do it, do it
You liking what I do? Do you? (That’s just how we do it, that’s just how we do it)
Know how to keep it cool, ooh, ooh (that’s just how we do it, that’s just how we do it)
And that’s just how we do it (that’s just how we do it)
Yeah, that’s just how we do it (that’s just how we do it)
And you could do it too, ooh, ooh
Yeah, that’s just how we do it
