DRAPER — There was a celebration of Corner Canyon golfers Tuesday afternoon at Meadowbrook Golf Course.
The Chargers came into the day with a 20-stroke lead over second-place Alta and never let it get away, claiming their second straight state 4A title — and also the second in the school’s four-year history.
Coach Ryan Kartchner was proud to be part of it.
“When we started, we had six girls (on the squad) and I asked them to go out and find some others so we would have a JV team,” Kartchner said. “Now, we (already) have 17 and a couple of state championships.”
Dominated by juniors, the Draper school is already looking forward to another run for the title next year, possibly taking advantage of its location, demographics and strong work ethic. Led by Emma Winfree’s two-day total of 153, Corner Canyon’s depth proved to be too much for anyone to overcome for a while.
“The girls just love to play,” said Corner Canyon assistant coach Lexi Gagon.
Part of it might be the team camaraderie. Kartchner, who doubles as the PGA pro at Sandy’s Hidden Valley Country Club, said the team had many social events during the season that inspired fun and intrasquad competition. Besides Winfree, Cristi Ciasca and Jamie Connell also finished among the top 10, and Kali Barlow and Makenna Kartchner weren’t far behind.
Not surprisingly, Alta’s Cora Mickelsen claimed medalist honors. Mickelsen carded two straight rounds of 4-under-par 68, which were the best rounds of any golfer both days. She finished nine shots ahead of Provo’s Naomi Soifua, who had scored the best rounds the last three years.
Corner Canyon spent much of the remainder of the afternoon celebrating their win. Gagon’s job was to hold on the trophy overnight and add it to the school’s trophy cabinet today.
“If I ever get a chance to hold it,” she said.
That took a while as the girls each took turns holding the UHSAA-sponsored trophy and, of course, posing for countless “selfie” photographs on the 18th green. The weather, which had been breezy and cool, provided some scattered showers but not enough to douse the excitement.
