Emma Chamberlain Gets Real About Mental Health


Emma Chamberlain is here to remind you that you’re not alone.

We’re all guilty of getting caught up in the never-ending social media scroll, and while it’s easy to compare yourself to others and allow the toxicity to consume you, it’s more important than ever to prioritize your mental well-being. Luckily, our favorite girl-next-door, YouTubing queen is here for support!

Despite her rise to internet-fame and beyond, Emma’s not afraid to strip away all the filters and open up about her personal journey with mental health. These are a few of our favorite moments when she got real and raw with the world…

1. When she admitted that she doesn’t ‘have it all together.’ One of the first moments our now wanna-be BFF got real on camera was when she announced she’d be leaving traditional schooling. In a video back in 2017, Emma revealed to fans that she was struggling to find a balance with school and her budding YouTube career. 

“I remember there were multiple nights where I pulled all-nighters, trying to be able to do YouTube and school because, for me, YouTube was what kept me sane in a way…I would rather not get any sleep and get a video up because getting that video up is the only thing that gives me an ounce of happiness…I started falling back into old habits. I wasn’t showing up to school, I was late every day. Sometimes, I’d pull up to school. I’d be sitting in the car and I would be balling my eyes out.”

After opening up about her experiences, she left fans with some incredible advice, proving once again, she is wise beyond her years:

“Just know that there are other options for you. If there’s something in your life that’s making you unhappy, that’s making you depressed, that makes you just absolutely so sad and just lowers the quality of your life…don’t feel like you ever have to stay in that. Your life is completely up to you, wherever you wanna take it.”

2. When she bravely opened up about how her early social media stardom led to major insecurities and eventually led to an ongoing eating disorder. Back in January, Emma opened up in an interview about her ongoing eating disorder. The 19-year-old star reflected on why social media played a big part in her body image struggles:

“I’ve been fully not at a healthy weight and I thought I was obese multiple times. It’s awful. My whole family was telling me I looked terrible. They were like, ‘You look like you’re dying.’ I was like, ‘I think I look great.’”

3.When she reminded everyone, yet again, that you never truly know what’s going on in someone else’s life. In a recent video interview, the social media star acknowledged that sometimes 10 million (and counting) followers comes with a hefty price. Emma shared why it’s so important to validate everyone’s problems and feelings whether or not they’re in the spotlight:

“I’ve had people try to tell me that I have not struggled with mental health and that it was all just a lie and whatever, because ‘how can you be unhappy? How can you be lonely?’…I think discrediting anyone’s mental health, whatever, no matter if they’re Selena Gomez or you know they’re the person sitting next to you in your math class, you can’t do that because every human struggles with it.”

4. When she shared how her struggles with depression and anxiety posed more problems during these uncertain times. In May, Emma partnered with the non-profit, Child Mind Institute’s latest campaign #WeThriveInside where in a brief video, she shared her advice on prioritizing your well-being in quarantine:

“I’ve struggled with depression and anxiety since I was younger, and I know in times of isolation, it can get a little bit worse…I’ve been making sure I stay connected with the people that I love, so friends and family, I’ve been calling my parents every single day, checking in on them, having good conversations with them and it really helps. Even though you can’t be with them, physically, just call…staying productive when cleaning and keeping your living space organized, having a comfortable, safe space to exist, really helps. I’ve also been staying creative, so painting, drawing, making YouTube videos, anything creative I can do I’m doing right now.”

5. When she filmed herself recovering from a meltdown, and helped her subscribers understand why self-care is so much more than face masks and bubble baths. A month ago, Emma shared a vulnerable video explaining how she coped with a recent mental breakdown. Throughout the day, she showed moments of triumphs and relapses:

“So basically, I had a mental breakdown yesterday. Let’s keep it plain and simple. And the reasoning for mental breakdown was basically I just have really, really bad anxiety. Sometimes I go through phases where it’s just like really, really bad. It affects my self-esteem and like my friendships and my relationships because I feel like everybody hates me, regret everything I’ve ever done, basically the worst emotions you can have…I actually talked to a therapist on the phone yesterday, it actually really helped!!!”
