The 2020 Oscar nominations arrived on Monday, January 13, and there was a whole lot of recognition for “those men.” Unfortunately, women were snubbed from one of the show’s biggest categories, and now two actors are speaking out.
Despite continued critical acclaim and an Oscar nomination for best adapted screenplay, Little Women director Greta Gerwig was not nominated for best director. Two of its stars, Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh, addressed the lack of recognition for the film’s director. Speaking with Deadline, Florence called the news “a big blow.” She continued, addressing the feelings of others involved in the movie, saying, “She created a film that is so her and so unique and it’s just come out of her, and it’s been a story she’s wanted to do for so long. I think everybody’s angry and quite rightly so. I can’t believe it’s happened again, but I don’t really know how to solve it. I don’t know what the answer is, other than we’re talking about it.”
Saoirse, meanwhile, was puzzled, saying, “I feel like if you’ve been nominated for best picture, you have essentially been nominated for best director. But to me, Greta, since she started, has made two perfect films, and I hope when she makes her next perfect movie, she gets recognized for everything, because I think she’s one of the most important filmmakers of our time.”
Although producer Amy Pascal called the move “disappointing,” she said that Greta is still happy with the nomination for best adapted screenplay, Deadline reported.
The lack of any women nominees for best director wasn’t the only major snub. Categories like best supporting actor and best supporting actress were compromised entirely of white nominees, and the lack of recognition for women in directing roles is a problem throughout Hollywood; the 2020 Golden Globes also featured no women nominees for best director.
