On November 9, South Korean girl group GFRIEND (여자친구) made their third comeback of the year with the release of their full-length album, 回: Walpurgis Night, and the music video for lead single “MAGO,” penned in part by Eunha, Yuju, and Umji. The music video, directed by Lumpens, takes on the recently popular retro disco concept, adding GFRIEND’s own flair. To do so, the six members (Sowon, Yerin, Eunha, Yuju, Sinb, and Umji) bring out their A-game when it comes to fashion and beauty.
The video opens up with a powerful entrance from leader Sowon clad in a formal black midi skirt and blazer combo as she makes her way into the club to reveal a spaghetti-strapped, coppery rhinestone dress, that she pairs with dainty diamanté hoops and matching necklace. We get a glimpse of Yerin getting ready in her room before cutting to Eunha and Umji ready to take on the night. We see the pair clad in almost matching wrap-around, long-sleeved, bedazzled dresses; Eunha’s flaunting silver hues, and Umji’s following suit in gold. They are soon joined by Sinb, who sports a sleek bob, flared black trousers, and a sparkly halter top complete with cut-off balloon sleeves.
“Every Do’s and Don’ts / They all bore me / I’ll fly away on a broom / Look at me / Don’t be afraid, I won’t get hurt / My life is waiting for you,” the lyrics go, per YouTube’s English closed captions, as we are transported back to Yerin’s room where she tackles outfit planning. From her long bubblegum hair to her feather-trimmed dress, pretty in pink has never looked so literal.
Last but definitely not least, back in the club, we see Yuju in green bell-bottom jeans and a long sleeve white crop top, complete with matching green clip in her long, black hair. She also dons disco platform shoes (like the rest) and a classic red lip. As the six gather for the chorus, Yerin’s final disco ‘fit is revealed in a strappy, silver crop top and Black, sequined flared pants. Later, we also see Sinb donning a full-sequin red bodysuit as she dances atop the bar, a look she completes with blinding jewelry.
The second verse, lead by Yerin, introduces another outfit change, and this time the sextet takes it high fashion. Clad in coordinating Chanel head to toe (yes, down to the jewelry), the six members offer their take on Parisienne-inspired styling (including beret hats, classic headbands, mini skirts, and cropped jackets in monochrome tweed). Yerin and Yuju break up the color palette with pink accents, as does Umji with her yellow top and mismatched hair barrettes. Eunha surprises with a chameleonic change, rocking a fringed, short black bob.
