Harry Styles Forgoes Face Mask in California, Fans Trend “Harry Wear a Mask”

The stans are at it again. On January 3, Harry Styles was spotted hanging out and about in Santa Barbara, California, alongside friends and Don’t Worry Darling director (and reported partner) Olivia Wilde. While these aren’t the first candids we’ve gotten of Harold recently, they are the first ones where he’s not wearing an appropriate face covering while off set.

Fans on Twitter noticed that instead of donning a face mask – because, you know, the pandemic is still very much a thing – the “Watermelon Sugar” singer is seen maskless in most of the photos or wearing just a simple bandana to cover his mouth and nose. (Studies show bandanas and neck gaiters are far less effective in preventing the spread of COVID-19, with some even suggesting that these methods could cause more harm than good.)

As a result of Harry’s face covering choices, on January 6, shortly after the pictures started circulating widely on social platforms, the phrase “HARRY WEAR A MASK” started trending worldwide on Twitter, as fans tweeted pleas for Harry to take stricter precautions in light of COVID-19.

Some fans of the singer were really upset to see Harry taking fairly lax safety precautions, pointing out the hypocrisy of selling COVID-19 merch that promoted staying at home while still going out with friends. Others also pointed out the dire circumstances in terms of virus treatment in California, where, according to the LA Times, 38,955 new cases have been registered per day and death rates are also on the up.

However, many fans on Twitter also came to Harry’s defense. “Ofc he’s not being as responsible as he should,” one user wrote. “But these are people he’s been quarantining with the entire time. he doesn’t have family in LA and these people are the closest to family he has.”

One positive through line in many of the tweets urging Harry to wear a mask was a clarification that this all comes from love. Another was relief that discourse was welcomed and fans weren’t punishing each other for being outspoken that they disagree with their fave’s choices. One user described the comfort she felt in seeing so many join in: “not cancel culture, just respectfully address what’s on bugging you like you would with a friend.”

Harry, if you need a few recommendations on comfortable masks… We got you covered, king!
