A wise person once said: “all clothing is unisex if you stop being such a little b*tch about it.” That person was not Harry Styles, but the man lives his life under the same premise. He wears pearl necklaces and pink suits in defiance of toxic masculinity, and in his latest (and possibly greatest) work of fashion art, the singer dons a floor-length, ruffled ball gown. This is the future of fashion.

For Vogue‘s December 2020 issue, my boyfriend Harry rejects outdated gendered ideals in an array of beautiful, feminine couture. Pleated skirts, floaty organza, and a hot pink petticoat were all a part of his photo shoot wardrobe. On the cover, Harry stars in a lace-covered, powder blue Gucci gown, frosted with Victorian-era ruffles and layered underneath a simple black blazer.

Though Harry says he’s been wearing “sweatpants, constantly,” during quarantine (same), he told Vogue that he’s loved getting dressed up since childhood. And with the help of his stylist, Harry Lambert, his aesthetic has evolved past the confines of gender stereotypes.

According to Harry, during his first meeting with the stylist, he suggested “a pair of flares, and I was like, ‘Flares? That’s f*cking crazy.'” It’s that relationship that’s helped him embrace his own authentic style without fear.

“What’s really exciting is that all of these lines are just kind of crumbling away. When you take away ‘There’s clothes for men and there’s clothes for women,’ once you remove any barriers, obviously you open up the arena in which you can play,” Harry explained.

“I’ll go in shops sometimes, and I just find myself looking at the women’s clothes thinking they’re amazing. It’s like anything—anytime you’re putting barriers up in your own life, you’re just limiting yourself. There’s so much joy to be had in playing with clothes. I’ve never really thought too much about what it means—it just becomes this extended part of creating something.”
