Hayley Kiyoko Shared How Fragrance and Identity Are Linked

Musician and actor Hayley Kiyoko is adding another credit to her resumé: perfumer! The star is about to launch her first scent, Hue, and the process behind creating the gender-inclusive scent was extremely important to Hayley, who has long since looked to fragrance to help express herself.

“I’ve really struggled with balancing my masculinity and femininity, and I thought it was important to create a fragrance that walked that perfect line,” Hayley told Allure. “I tried to include a little bit of everything in one perfume, which was very challenging where the notes are concerned. But that’s who I am as a person.” She worked with a pro perfumer on the scent, which features notes of blood orange, lychee, rose, peony, musk, and cacao, and though she struggled with finding the ideal balance at first, it all clicked when she realized making a perfume was just like writing a song. “You have a beginning, a middle, and an end to a song — just like the first spray of a perfume — then, the scent on your skin, then, the dry-down.”

Hayley wants Hue to be a scent that everyone can enjoy, a fragrance that brings confidence and empowerment with every spritz. “It’s important to remind people that they are welcome and that they do belong,” she shared. “That’s what the name of the perfume is inspired by. We all bring color to this world. I’m hoping that this perfume boosts people’s confidence and helps them feel that they belong.” Hayley told Allure that she used to wear Elizabeth Arden Green Tea to middle school and says it made her feel confident while she figured out her sexuality, and she wants her scent to do the same.

Hayley has spoken at length about her sexuality and identity before. In 2019, she told Kelly Clarkson that being gay is her “biggest strength,” and that she wants to help others by being vocal about her journey. “My biggest weakness growing up was that I was gay and I was different than everyone else,” she said at the time. “Now it’s become my biggest strength because it’s empowered me. Going into my music career, I was just like, ‘If I’m scared, everyone else will be.’ So, I have to embrace who I am. I have to be the brave one because if I take that first step, everyone else will follow. And they will hopefully grow to feel inspired, and know that they can have a good life.”
