PROVO — Valley’s boys golf team is well on its way to three-peating as 1A champs after a dominating performance on the opening day of the state championship at East Bay Golf Course on Tuesday.
Valley’s top four golfers shot 76, 77, 79 and 81 respectively as the Buffaloes finished with 313 strokes. Rich is a distant second with a 346.
At Soldier Hollow in last year’s state championships, Valley narrowly beat Rich by eight strokes for the title. The team title is a foregone conclusion in Wednesday’s final round.
Medalist honors, however, are anything but a foregone conclusion.
Valley’s Cobe Reck leads the tournament by one stroke after shooting a 76. Last year he shot 76-76 over the two rounds to win comfortably by nine strokes.
This year there are three golfers within three shots of Reck, two of whom are his own teammates. Valley’s Isaac Stout shot an opening-round 77, while Chevy Spencer shot a 79.
Rich’s Nick Jarman sits in third place after a 78.
