“Jeopardy!” Host Alex Trebek Has Passed Away

Alex Trebek, the famed host of Jeopardy!, has passed away at the age of 80.

On Sunday, November 8, the official Jeopardy! Twitter account confirmed news of his passing, which was previously reported by TMZ. “Jeopardy! is saddened to share that Alex Trebek passed away peacefully at home early this morning, surrounded by family and friends. Thank you, Alex,” the tweet read.

Trebek had been hosting Jeopardy! since 1984, TVLine notes. He appeared on more than 8,000 episodes of the series, and became a fixture in pop culture, even inspiring a Saturday Night Live sketch that featured Will Ferrell taking on the role of the legendary game show host.

News of his passing came after Trebek shared that he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in March 2019, TV Line reported. At the time of his diagnosis, he had appeared in a video message, telling viewers, “I’m going to fight this, and I’m going to keep working. And with the love and support of my family and friends, and with the help of your prayers also, I plan to beat the low survival-rate statistics for this disease.”

Trebek was well-regarded by many of the celebrities and contestants that had appeared on the show. During a recent November 5 episode of the series, one contestant had credited Trebek with helping him to learn English, telling the host, “My grandfather, who raised me… I used to sit on his lap and watch you every day. So, it’s a pretty special moment for me, man. Thank you very much.”

Following his passing, many took to social media to celebrate his legacy and reflect on his impact. Jonathan Van Ness tweeted that Trebek was an “icon,” while former Jeopardy! contestant Ken Jennings shared his gratitude, tweeting, “Alex wasn’t just the best ever at what he did. He was also a lovely and deeply decent man, and I’m grateful for every minute I got to spend with him.” Another fan called him “a fixture at our family table,” adding, “Thank you for making learning fun, wrong answers hilarious and giving us permission to geek out.”
