They might have debuted only months ago but K-pop’s power rookie group aespa has already landed their first major fashion partnership. As announced on February 10 via Twitter, the quartet has been named global brand ambassadors for French luxury house Givenchy.
All four members of the group – Karina, Winter, Ningning, and Giselle – will serve as the maison‘s new faces in 2021. Typically, fashion houses and brands select individual members from groups to serve as ambassadors – think EXO’s Chanyeol and Prada or BLACKPINK’s Lisa with MAC – so it’s especially notable that Givenchy’s new creative director, Matthew M. Williams, decided to tap the entire group.
“When I first saw aespa, I was overwhelmed with the energy each member had,” Williams said of Givenchy’s new global reps in a press statement shared by SM Entertainment. “Both as a group and individually as Karina, Giselle, Winter, and Ningning, I could feel the strong individuality and style of each member, so naturally they would fit with Givenchy. aespa’s fashion is having their own color.” “We are delighted to be with Matthew, the new creative director at Givenchy,” the group added in return.
To debut their partnership with Givenchy, aespa modeled the brand in a black and white shoot. Giselle wears embellished mesh gloves and a boxy black mini dress, also embellished. Karina has on an old Hollywood-inspired floor-length gown with cutouts at the back and elbows. Ningning wears a drapey midi dress, embellished with hardware chains, cords, and grommets for straps. And Winter has on a stylish two-piece look, with fitted light trousers and a beautifully cropped blouse constructed of silk ribbon. As Koreaboo notes, the quartet had also sported Givenchy pieces on their social media prior to the announcement, which could have been a hint. (The pictures seem to have been taken the day of the B&W shoot, judging by the members’ hairstyles.)
In recent years, the high fashion world has embraced many Korean entertainers with gusto, from BTS’s custom Dior tour looks to the BLACKPINK girls and their individual partnerships with top brands Saint Laurent, Dior, Chanel, and Celine. Givenchy’s new ambassadorship with aespa is a brand first for the label as, per SM’s statement, they hadn’t previously worked so closely with a K-pop act. (Kang Daniel had modeled for the brand’s beauty branch.) The four-piece look right at home in their shoot with Givenchy and we can’t wait to see what this ambassadorship has in store!
