2021 LEN EUROPEAN AQUATICS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Although Russia remains atop the overall medal standings through day 4 of these European Championships, Great Britain is holding fast in the 2nd slot, boosted by the nation’s gold medal in the mixed medley relay.
Prior to that, however, Anton Chupkov ripped a winning time of 2:06.99 to give Russia the gold in the men’s 200m breaststroke, thus keeping his native land one piece of hardware ahead of GBR.
As we alluded to yesterday, Boglarka Kapas and Katinka Hosszu made the most of their racing opportunity in the women’s 200m fly for host nation of Hungary. Kapas took home the gold while teammate Hosszu reaped the runner-up position. Svetlana Chimrova earned bronze for Russia as the 3rd fastest finisher. The Hungarians’ finish helped bump them ahead of the Netherlands heading into tomorrow.
Surprising was the fact that 200m backstroke world champion Evgeny Rylov of Russia was rendered medal-less in the men’s 100m back tonight while Britain’s Duncan Scott was left off the podium in the 200m IM. For both men, they have already qualified for the Olympic Games and have that as their final destination.
Hugo Gonzalez helped move Spain into slot #6 by way of his double medal-reaping night. The Cal Bear took the 100m back silver as a warm-up to his monstrous 200m IM performance which saw him clock 1:56.76 as a new national record.
