Today, January 8, Spanish fashion house Loewe launched a capsule collection in collaboration and inspired Hayao Miyazaki’s 1988 film My Neighbor Totoro. I grew up watching the film and, beyond the mystically detailed world Miyazaki created, My Neighbor Totoro is also a story about the wonders of being a child and the bond between siblings Mei and Satsuki and their giant, fluffy friend. As an adult, I still feel emotional when I rewatch the movie every few months and reminisce about the wonderful adventures my brother and I’s imagination took us on when we were younger.
To this day, I love my Totoro stuffed animal and my Catbus pen, but the Loewe x Totoro collaboration takes it to another level. Seeing iconic Loewe silhouettes like the puzzle, balloon, and hammock covered with Totoro motifs proves just how much My Neighbor Totoro resonates with all ages. “There is a natural longing for heartwarming feelings right now,” Loewe’s creative director Jonathan Anderson explained in a statement. “When I think of a movie that affords me that kind of solace, speaking just as directly to a child as it does to an adult, that movie is My Neighbor Totoro.”
The capsule collection, available online and in selected stores, features a variety of small leather accessories, some of Loewe’s most classic bags, as well as t-shirts, hoodies, jumpers, and even biker jackets. The pieces are all creatively adorned with the familiar fantastical landscapes and some of the most recognizable characters, like the susuwatari, from the beloved animated film.
Loewe stays true to its impeccable leather craftsmanship with this collaboration, with its distinctive leather marquetry and hand-painting of the characters taking center stage. According to the brand, the collaboration with the classic anime stemmed out of “a mutual love of craft and artisanal techniques, a respective focus on nature and its importance to humankind.”
The magical relatability of My Neighbor Totoro makes this collaboration one that we will surely try to get our hands on (while joyfully playing the Totoro theme song in our heads.) Check out some pieces from the limited-edition collab below:
