Megan Thee Stallion Blasts Tory Lanez on “Shots Fired”

Megan thee Stallion let it rip on the first track off Good News

Last night, the Houston hottie dropped her debut studio album and, as expected, addressed the July shooting incident that allegedly involved Tory Lanez. On “Shots Fired” Megan talks about being shot and lied about by the person who pulled the trigger.

Megan does not mince words on the song that feels cathartic in allowing her to take the space to fully tell her side of the story — and the fallout from that night.

“Imagine me givin’ a fuck it was your fuckin’ birthday,” she says in the third line of the song alluding to her frustration with rapper Tory Lanez, who is currently facing two counts — a felony for assault with a semiautomatic firearm and another felony for carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle — in connection with the July 12 shooting in Los Angeles. His birthday is on July 27.

Megan also doubles down in the song, claiming that Tory offered her money to keep quiet, as orignally reported by GQ. Tory’s attorney denied that the rapper offered Megan and her friend money. “And if it weren’t for me, same week, you would have been indicted (Should’ve let them lock your ass up),” she raps. “You offered M’s not to talk, I guess that made my friend excited.”

The 25-year-old also draws parallels to Breonna Taylor, the Black medical worker who was killed by Louisville, Kentucky police officers last March. “Now here we are, 2020, eight months later/And we still ain’t got no fuckin’ justice for Breonna Taylor,” Megan raps. The lines consequently also serve as a dig to Tory who marched for Breonna but allegedly assaulted Megan, another Black woman.

In the months since the shooting, Megan has dropped new music, won an MTV VMA Award, became GQ’s Rapper of the Year, and was honored by TIME in the TIME100. She also wrote an op-ed for The New York Times titled “Why I Speak Up for Black Women.”

Megan spoke about the concept of “protecting Black women,” a term that often serves as a performative alliance with little weight on the practice. “If I’m going through something, I should be able to voice what I feel without it offending somebody else,” she told Apple Music 1.  “Like, me saying protect Black women, I shouldn’t have triggered so many men or it shouldn’t have triggered… It shouldn’t have triggered anybody. It should be like, ‘Yeah, you’re right. You do need to protect our Black women.’ Like, I wasn’t saying that to start a fight or to cause conflict, and that shouldn’t have been a thing that made people raise their eyebrows in a negative way.”

Megan also talked to Apple Music 1 about her professional and personal growth this year. “I’ve learned definitely not to second guess myself and continue to like stand my ground,” she said. “Even when it seems like everybody is against what you’re saying, if you really believe in it, like, stick with it and stand with it because everybody may not agree right now, or they may not understand what the bigger picture is right now, eventually you’ll hear me and you’ll get it, and I’m not gonna change myself for anybody.”

Megan’s 17-track album is available on all streaming apps now and has features from City Girls, DaBaby, Lil Durk, SZA, Popcaan, Big Sean, 2 Chainz, Beyoncé, and Young Thug.
