CHICAGO — Miguel Cairo will be the bench coach for Tony La Russa’s managerial return to the White Sox dugout, as confirmed by a Major League source to MLB.com on Wednesday. The club has not confirmed the hiring, which was first reported by The Athletic.

Cairo, 46, is a native of Venezuela and was the consummate utility performer for 17 Major League seasons from 1996-2012. He played four seasons for La Russa in St. Louis (2001-03, ’07), and he has been working as a Minor League infield coordinator for the Yankees after previously serving as a special assistant in the Reds’ front office.

La Russa, whose second managerial tenure in Chicago was announced on Oct. 29, spoke during his introductory press conference of maintaining coaching continuity with former manager Rick Renteria’s staff moving into 2021. Renteria and his ’20 crew guided the White Sox to their first postseason appearance since 2008, and their first winning season since ’12, before the club parted ways with the manager and longtime pitching coach Don Cooper.

Hitting coach Frank Menechino, first-base coach Daryl Boston and assistant pitching coach Curt Hasler are expected back from Renteria’s staff as part of La Russa’s group. Ethan Katz, who most recently worked as the Giants’ assistant pitching coach, will be named the White Sox new pitching coach. Katz was Chicago ace Lucas Giolito’s coach at Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles, and he worked with Giolito in the offseason prior to the 2019 season.

It’s still not known who will serve as Chicago’s third-base coach and assistant hitting coach, as well as whether the team will go with a third pitching coach. Joe McEwing, who served as Renteria’s bench coach for the past four years and was the third-base coach from 2012-16, could be a possibility.
