Cue the chocolates and lavish floral arrangements, because Valentine’s Day is here again. The day of romance and love leaves some feeling fuzzy and in their feels, but for those without a special someone, or those that prefer sharing the romance on a day not ordained by greeting card companies, Olivia Rodrigo is here to help.
It’s no secret that the musical mastermind behind “Drivers License” knows a thing or two about mending a broken heart. Literally everyone has been content to blast her heartbreaking single on repeat — helping to smash Spotify records in the process — but Olivia has gone ahead and curated a complete playlist of tunes for the broken-hearted. Spotify handed her the digital keys to its Broken Heart playlist series, and she created a “Sad Girl Songs” edition that features singles from Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, and Kacey Musgraves.
Speaking with Bustle, Olivia emphasized that anyone of any gender can cry along to these tracks, saying, “Music helps me during a breakup, and just in life in general because it really makes me feel a lot less alone, and it kind of articulates feelings that are sometimes really hard to articulate. So that’s what I sort of tried to do in these playlists. I think they capture all of the feelings that go with a breakup — all of the anger, and angst, and sadness, and longing, so I really hope you dig it.”
Along with the inclusion of pop’s true heartbreak queens, Olivia went back into the ‘90s vault, including tunes from Radiohead, Fiona Apple, and The Smashing Pumpkins. There’s also plenty of current chart-toppers like St. Vincent, Lorde, and Clario, along with songs from The Smiths and Elliot Smith.
As for how to get the most out of your listening experience, Olivia confessed that these are some of the tracks she prefers to drive and cry to. Whether your Valentine’s Day plans include a moment to cry or a day spent cuddled under covers with pretend boyfriend Peter Kavinsky, Olivia’s playlist can be enjoyed in full, below.
