PHOTOS: Trump Supporters Break Into Capitol Building, Wreak Havoc

A mob of angry Trump supporters broke into the U.S. Capitol on January 6, calling for the results of the 2020 election to be overturned. In a surreal scene, the crowd moved through the stately building, waving oversized flags reading “Trump is my president” and “Don’t tread on me.” Some smashed windows. Several people were photographed screaming from the dais in the U.S. Senate chamber, and gas was reportedly deployed to try to disperse the crowd. Washington D.C. police said that one woman died after being shot inside the building, according to the Washington Post.

As evening fell, some of the pro-Trump forces had started to leave the building. Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has imposed a 6 p.m. curfew. Per the Post, she emphasized that the curfew applies throughout the city, and that anyone remaining on Capitol grounds would be forced to leave.

This is what Wednesday’s events looked like, according to Getty photographers on the scene.
