Bob Russell, a longtime contributor to the sport of lacrosse, died on Tuesday, April 20, at the age of 69.
Russell was a member of the US Lacrosse Board of Directors, serving on the Executive Committee from 2010 to 2012 when he was the chair of the Men’s Game Committee. Russell volunteered his time for the organization in many other capacities including serving on the post-collegiate club subcommittee and the publications advisory board.
One of his proudest accomplishments in the sport was his role as a founding member of Connecticut New York Youth Lacrosse (CONNY), a volunteer-led youth lacrosse league where he served as president and president emeritus. With over 16,000 US Lacrosse youth members, CONNY is the largest youth league in the country affiliated with US Lacrosse. In 2016, Russell was inducted into the Connecticut Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
Russell has also served on the board of the Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association and was in the role of special counsel at the time of his death.
Russell, who was born in Scotland, played the sport collegiately at Ohio University. He coached the Scottish national team at the 2006 world championship and was involved with numerous organizations connected to the sport, including the Wounded Warrior Project and Brendan Looney Foundation.
Russell’s wife, Katy, who was the longtime president of Madison (Conn.) Youth Lacrosse, died in 2016. Together, they raised three lacrosse playing sons — Rob, Matt and Kevin — who all played at the collegiate level. Rob and Kevin were both captains at St. Lawrence and Matt was a captain at Navy where he was a three-time All-American and helped the Mids reach the national title game in 2004.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 27 at St. Margaret’s in Madison, Conn., at 10 a.m., limited to close friends and family. Calling hours will be held on Monday, April 26 from 5-7 p.m. at Swan Funeral Home in Madison, Conn. In lieu of flowers and in the spirit of Bob’s desire to support his community, memorial donations may be made in the name of Bob & Katy Russell to CONNY Lacrosse.
