Add “musical artist” to Rev. Raphael Warnock’s growing résumé, since Georgia’s recently elected first Black senator has a decade-old album to his name.
The pastor at Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church and politician released a joint gospel album with Grammy-winning singer and the original Dreamgirl Jennifer Holliday in 2011 titled Goodness & Mercy. After seeing Warnock on the church’s weekly television broadcast, Holliday came up with the idea to blend her singing with his preaching in a project that was eventually released on her Euphonic Records label, according to Journal of Gospel Music.
The nearly 30-second intro, titled “Introducing Rev. Dr. Raphael G. Warnock,” describes him as “a clarion voice of truth and justice” and “an ambassador of God.” The two performed the titular track “Goodness & Mercy” at Trinity United Church of Christ in the Southside of Chicago in 2011.
