The Riverdale gang is all grown up and headed for adulthood. After cast and crew continually hinted at a possible time jump for the series, the Riverdale of the future has arrived, and things are very different, though still very dramatic.
For those who are just tuning in, Riverdale recently returned for its fifth season. Starting with the gang still in high school, the show will now jump seven years into the future, following the friends as they navigate adulthood. Although possible future plot lines have been hinted at, including a confirmed new love interest for Veronica Lodge, fans are finally get their first look at the revamped Riverdale in a new trailer.
Making its way online on Thursday, February 4, the trailer features Archie leaving an apparent war, Jughead struggling with the writing process as a published author, and as for Betty, well, she’s joined the FBI. The brief teaser also sees Veronica introducing her new husband to Archie, and at its conclusion, Betty is seated across from what looks to be a therapist, discussing some sort of trauma she’s endured.
Fans, of course, are already dissecting the clip. While some are concerned that Archie’s war takes place on what looks to be a football field, others are wondering what else Veronica could be up to, pointing out that so far, we have only met her husband.
Fans will ultimately have to wait and see what happens next, but as KJ Apa told Entertainment Weekly, the friends will certainly have a lot of catching up to do. “In the time jump I feel like we had to refresh our audience with a new theme, which is the fact that we’re all a lot older,” he explained. “I feel like that in itself, the fact that we’re all older and a lot of time has passed, no one’s really kept in touch, it adds a lot more things to play with.”
