S.L. Chamber places new time capsule in building’s cornerstone

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake Chamber on Tuesday placed a time capsule in the cornerstone of the Commercial Club Building, replacing the 108-year-old capsule Commercial Club members hid away on July 5, 1909.

The original capsule was removed from its hiding place in April to celebrate the chambers 130th anniversary. Inside the copper box was a well-preserved Bible, a 1909 Commercial Club Year Book, a typewritten copy of the address given at the building’s cornerstone laying, business cards from the contractors who helped construct the building and a copy of the Commercial Club’s 1909 complaint against the railroad companies.

The new time capsule — made of copper like the original — will be opened on the chamber’s 200th anniversary in 2087. Included in the time capsule are several pictures, copies of the chamber’s history book and 2017 policy guide, a message from chamber President Lane Beattie, predictions for the future, several chamber coins, a pin from the 2002 Olympic Winter Games and newspaper clippings.
