The Weeknd goes monochrome with spellbinding performance of ‘Blinding Lights’ on ‘Colbert’

The Weeknd stopped by The Late Show With Stephen Colbert last night (December 6) for a second time this week. This time around, the Grammy-winning singer performed new single ‘Blinding Lights’.

Broadcast in black and white, the XO singer performed in a hall of mirrors while members of the audience held up small, square mirrors to reflect light from the stage, resulting in a glistening strobe effect.

Watch the performance below:

‘Blinding Lights’ was teased last month in an advertisement for Mercedes-Benz’s new EQC days after the release of The Weeknd’s other new single ‘Heartless’.

On Thursday’s (December 5) episode of Colbert, The Weeknd performed ‘Heartless’, as he wandered through the halls of New York’s Ed Sullivan Theater.

In August, The Weeknd teased that his ‘Chapter VI’ album was on the way. Posting an image of himself on Twitter, he said: “album mode full effect”, much to the delight of his followers.

Hinting at big things to come in a tweet last year, he said of the upcoming project: “some chapters are smaller than others. not this next one though…”

Speaking to the crowd during a show in his home city of Toronto, he teased: “I wanna let you guys know, being in Toronto these past two days… I haven’t been this inspired in years, I got to tell you.”

Meanwhile, it was reported earlier this year that The Weeknd was being sued by a trio of British songwriters who claim that he ripped them off on his track ‘A Lonely Night’.

Taylor Swift Receives One of Her First Guitars in “Christmas Tree Farm” Music Video

In Taylor Swift’s brand new video for her holiday single, “Christmas Tree Farm,” we see Taylor unwrap a very special gift. No, it’s not her cats, Olivia, Meredith, and Benjamin, or a present from her BFF, Selena Gomez. It’s one of her first guitars!

The video, which is all about, yes, the Christmas tree farm where Tay grew up, and reliving those happy memories as an adult, features clips from Taylor’s childhood home movies, including one of the all-important Christmases where she received a guitar. Little did her family know that Tay would go on to become one of the world’s most influential singer-songwriters of all time, perhaps in part due to that very guitar!

We also see baby Taylor all bundled up in a cozy red knitted sweater with a hood, held by her mom Andrea, toddler Tay in a lavender snowsuit being pulled on a sled, and curly-haired child Taylor admiring the Christmas tree lights. She plays in the snow, sits on Santa’s lap, dives into her stocking on Christmas morning, and pretty much has the best time ever. A toy train even circles the tree, just like in the movies! In short, it’s adorable.

At about 2:56 in the video is when we see young Taylor unwrap her guitar. Do you think her parents felt the world change as their daughter held the new instrument for the first time? Probably.

Taylor dropped “Christmas Tree Farm” out of the blue, after a quick teaser video where she asked her cats their opinion on whether or not she should release it in time for the holiday season. “I actually did grow up on a Christmas tree farm. In a gingerbread house, deep within the yummy gummy gumdrop forest. Where, funnily enough, this song is their national anthem. #ChristmasTreeFarm song and video out now,” Taylor wrote on Twitter when the song and video officially dropped. Thanks to Tay, we’ve got our new favorite holiday song and will be playing “Christmas Tree Farm” on repeat until December 26 — and maybe after, TBH.

A new Kanye West opera, ‘Mary’, is arriving this weekend

Kanye West has made another opera, ‘Mary’, and it’s set to be performed this weekend.

The opera will be staged at Miami Marine Stadium on December 8 and will feature music from West’s Sunday Service performers.

It’s also set to be suitably festive too, with West announcing the show on Twitter by sharing  a biblical quote that tells of an angel visiting Mary to tell her that she is pregnant with Jesus Christ.

It follows on from West’s debut opera ‘Nebuchadnezzar’, which was performed last month.

The opera, which was directed by Italian performance artist Vanessa Beecroft, took place at The Hollywood Bowl on November 24. The event also featured music by Kanye’s Sunday Service performers, alongside Peter Colins & Infinities Song.

The latest opera will also be directed by Beecroft, although no further details about the opera have yet been released.

A press release described ‘Nebuchadnezzar’ as “an original opera, based on the biblical story of the Babylonian King from the Book of Daniel…Set in the 6th century BC, the Book of Daniel recounts Nebuchadnezzar’s transition from wicked, imperious, self-declared ruler to a true believer who finds salvation in his faith.”

Meanwhile, West is set to continue his journey into religious music in the form of a sequel to his recent album ‘Jesus Is King’, this time featuring Dr Dre.

Ye has made his admiration clear for Dre in the past. In a 2010 Rolling Stone article he recalled how overwhelmed he was when he met the Californian rapper/producer.

“I first met Dre in December of 2003. He asked me to produce a track for The Game,” West said. “At first I was star-struck, but within 30 minutes I was begging him to mix my next album. He’s the definition of a true talent: Dre feels like God placed him here to make music, and no matter what forces are aligned against him, he always ends up on the mountaintop.”

Watch the Weeknd Peform “Blinding Lights” on Colbert

The Weeknd returned to The Late Show With Stephen Colbert last night for the second time this week. This time around, he performed his comeback single “Blinding Lights.” The Weeknd’s set was broadcast in black and white, and the singer performed in a hall of mirrors while audience members held up small, square mirrors to reflect light from the stage, resulting in a kind of strobe effect. Watch it happen below.

Pharrell Williams was one of Colbert’s interviewees during the episode (Pharrell was also a performer on the show earlier in the week). Colbert and Pharrell discussed music, space, and time travel. When Colbert asked if Pharrell was interested in visiting space, Pharrell said, “No I think the pixilation on Nat Geo is awesome.” He later added, “Man, I’m such a poser. I love space but I’m not trying to go.” He said the same of time travel.

On Thursday’s episode of Colbert, the Weeknd performed another new single, “Heartless,” as he wandered through the halls of the Ed Sullivan Theater.

The Weeknd originally debuted “Blinding Lights” last month in a Mercedes-Benz commercial. Shortly after releasing that single and “Heartless” on streaming platforms, he shared a trippy music video for the latter song starring Metro Boomin. In addition to the new music, the Weeknd stars in the Safdie brothers’ latest flick Uncut Gems, which arrives in theaters on December 13.

One Direction’s Harry Styles, Liam Payne, and Niall Horan Release New Music on Same Day

It’s a fact that Friday is the best day of the week, but friends, this Friday may go down in history as one of the best in recent memory. Why? Because on Friday, December 6, three out of the five One Direction alums — Liam Payne, Niall Horan, and Harry Styles — dropped new music.

It’s the perfect storm: three singers we loved back when they were in one of our favorite boys bands have now individually released new music just for us. The biggest release in terms of amount of music comes courtesy of Liam, who released his debut album LP1. Yes, believe it or not, this is Liam’s first, real-deal complete album; up until this point, he’s been releasing singles. The new album includes his popular singles “Strip That Down,” “Stack It Up,” and “For You,” his duet with Rita Ora off the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack. Shortly after LP1‘s release, Liam tweeted out, “Blown away by this reaction already! Thanks to everyone that’s picked up the album so far, your support doesn’t go unnoticed.”

Next up: Niall. The singer/songwriter’s latest single is “Put a Little Love on Me.” Ahead of the song’s release, Niall shared his excitement on Twitter, writing, “The song I’m releasing tonight at midnight EST is one of my favourite songs I’ve written and a song very special to me. Hope you love it.” The song is right in Niall’s sweet spot of “ballads you can slow dance with your S.O. to” so, of course, it’s a total winner. It wasn’t just the single that was released, either. In addition, Niall released the music video for the song and teased “Put a Little Love on Me” would be part of the North American leg of his Nice to Meet Ya tour. In a thankful tweet to his fans, Niall wrote: “I’m jet lagged out of my mind but I couldn’t not stay up to see your reaction to this song. I love this song and I’m glad it’s yours now, can’t wait to play it live on tour for ya!”

Finally, there’s Harry’s music video for “Adore You,” which comes from his forthcoming second album, Fine Line. Never one to do the bare minimum, Harry didn’t just make a music video for “Adore You.” Instead, he went all out and turned the music video into a short film with a nearly 4-minute prologue revealing a story about a young man — Harry, obvi — with a smile so bright who is so pure of heart but is rejected by other townspeople in the fictional fishing village where he lives. The video is everything and it gifted us with the term “resting fish face.” Overall, it’s a “yes” from me.

While Liam, Niall, and Harry are all currently dominating the music scene, we can’t forget about Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson. Both 1D alums have also released new music: Back on November 15, Zayn let loose upon the world his single “Flames” featuring British DJ Jungleboi. As for Louis, he released the single “Don’t Let It Break Your Heart” on November 23. The single will be featured on his upcoming debut album, Walls, which arrives at the end of January 2020.
