Takeaways From the US Lacrosse “Athlete Mindset Series”

Former professional lacrosse player Chazz Woodson, a member of the US Lacrosse Board of Directors and the head men’s lacrosse coach at Hampton University, was one of the guests on the US Lacrosse Athlete Mindset webinar series.

Over the last eight weeks, US Lacrosse hosted the “Athlete Mindset Series,” a weekly journey into specific aspects of sports psychology, which impact athletes on and off the field – specifically focused on providing actionable resources for athletes and those who support them.

This collaboration between Mindset Training Institute Founder, Arman Taghizadeh, M.D., or “Dr. T.” as he is better known, and Kevin Greene, Director of Coach and Athlete Development for US Lacrosse featured weekly guest athletes from the sport’s past and present.

“We are incredibly grateful for Dr. T’s commitment to this project,” Greene said. “With Dr. T being a Johns Hopkins trained Medical Doctor, Board-Certified Adult, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist specializing in Sports Psychiatry, and a former NCAA Division I Athlete, his unique skill set allowed US Lacrosse to present our membership with medically-based education and resources in such a “human” way.”

Here are the top takeaways from the US Lacrosse Athlete Mindset Series:

Mindset and the Return to Learn/Play featuring Chazz Woodson

On managing thoughts and anxiety, it is important to recognize and acknowledge them so that we can identify what is within our control and what is not in our control. From there, we can process what is out of our control and develop processes/plans that will guide our focus.

Racism and Mindset featuring Jovan Miller and Lauren Davenport

Racism is learned behavior that is a response to a general sense of insignificance, unease, and inadequacy that creates psychological defense mechanisms stemming from feeling of insecurity and anxiety. The good thing is that since it is learned behavior, it can be unlearned—or re-taught.

Mental Health Vulnerabilities and Mindset featuring Anna Barton

Mental illness does not discriminate, and many elite athletes are more vulnerable to things such as anxiety, depression, and burnout/overtraining syndrome. It is important to be aware of symptoms and to get help from the right sources.

Leadership and Mindset featuring Ryan Kern, 2ndLt. USMC

Using the word “I” instills commitment, accountability, and responsibility. When looking at leadership opportunities, language, listening, and an openness to learn help us to demand excellence from ourselves so that we can better serve others.

Confidence, Resilience and Mindset featuring Maria Auth and Grant Ament

Choosing to have the attitude of “mistakes are learning opportunities” and always looking for ways to improve helps build resilience. Having fun and having increased confidence will not only help increase resilience, it will help improve performance.

Athletic Injury, Recovery and Mindset featuring Morgan Alexander

It is important to think of injuries both in terms of physical and emotional. From there, you can approach recovery in ways that make sense for you. When looking to prevent either injury, it is important to think about things like rest, consistent sleep, nutrition, and balance.

Creating Balance, Increasing Motivation and Mindset featuring Tom Marecheck

Balance is key to motivation because it allows the brain to rest—and a rested brain is more motivated. We need to have balance in both our attention to mental/emotional wellbeing and our time for physical/professional growth.
