My scariest nightmare came to life recently when my suitcase fell apart at the airport. I was trying to close my bag after security decided my perfume needed inspecting (don’t worry, I got to keep the Chanel) and was tugging with all my might because I had tried to fit four pairs of shoes into a bag for a two-day drip. Being stylish ain’t easy, kids. All of a sudden, the zipper popped right off, shaking me to my very core. I stood there, horrified and frankly unsure what to do. What does one do when their suitcase breaks IN THE AIRPORT?? The only solution seemed to be…go to the most expensive store in the terminal and buy an overpriced bag. ‘Twas a major bummer.
After some moping, I realized the experience was my own fault, as I had been using the same sad duffel for five years. I vowed from that day forward never to be caught in an airport without a proper suitcase again. Besides, there’s something so *adult* about buying nice luggage. Instead of feeling like you’re a teen on spring break in the airport, suddenly you’re a jetsetter, galavanting around the globe on adventures of your own making.
A good piece of luggage can be the difference between a gate-side disaster and an easy, breezy trip. From durable, hard-shell spinners to elevated duffels you won’t want to pretend aren’t yours at baggage claim, there are suitcases for every kind of traveler, and every kind of budget. Here are 19 of our faves.
