The “Mean Girls” Musical Won’t Reopen on Broadway Post-Pandemic

In another sad batch of Broadway news, Mean Girls: the Musical has officially played its last performance on the Great White Way.

Per an announcement on January 8, the Tony-nominated musical will not reopen when Broadway does in the eventual post-pandemic times. All theatre has been shut down since March, including Mean Girls, which performed for the final time on March 11, 2020, making the show’s run 805 performances long.

“The chance to bring this show to Broadway, with such a talented young ensemble and five astounding female leads, has been a dream come true,” creator Tina Fey told Deadline. “And to our fierce and dedicated fans – the limit of our gratitude does not exist.”

Many of the show’s stars posted heartwarming messages about the news, reminiscing of their time within the August Wilson Theatre.

“I’m overwhelmed with gratitude,” wrote Taylor Louderman, who originated the role of Regina George in the musical. “I know how lucky I am to have been a part of something so much larger than I am and a success. Thank you to my dream team and also to our fans who really made us feel important: like our work mattered…like we made a difference. Thank you universe for the opportunity, and the opportunities it continues to lead to. ❤️ celebrating you, Mean Girls team…love to everyone who has shown support of the show.”

Erika Henningsen, who originated the role of Cady Heron on stage, wrote, “Cheers to the greatest years of high school I could have ever imagined. To the wild crazy family we formed. And to every kid who listens to the cast album for years to come. We made something that brought people together. That made people laugh. There is no greater gift.”

With Broadway dark for the foreseeable future, there’s no telling how many more shows may face a similar fate as Mean Girls. And while that may be the farthest thing from “grool” to happen, the sadness felt by many in the wake of such news only emphasizes the importance and special power of Broadway and musical theatre.
