I’ll be the first to admit that spending more time at home staring at a computer screen has definitely taken a toll on my neck and back. Since most of us have adapted to a cramped and confined lifestyle since quarantine began, pesky aches and pains are inevitable.

If you’re like me, you may have tried back massagers or heating pads to get rid of pain. If these options haven’t worked, don’t lose hope. I found a simple solution that has helped me immensely — and it even came recommended by my doctor. I’m talking about a good ol’ foam roller.

According to Harvard Health Publishing, “Foam rolling helps release tension in the muscles, relieve muscle soreness and improve flexibility and range of motion.” Chris Kolba, a physical therapist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, writes on the center’s website that foam rolling doesn’t affect “muscle performance and strength, and may be used as a cheaper method of soft tissue massage.”

As someone who had never used a foam roller, I bought this AmazonBasics High-Density Foam Roller, which is the No. 1 best-selling foam roller on Amazon. It has over 35,500 ratings and more than 27,300 five-star reviews — and I totally understand why. Along with easing my back pain, the roller has helped other shoppers with spasms, fibromyalgia and sciatica.

“I’ve been suffering from shoulder, upper back pain and muscle spasms for years, and was on the verge of giving up on finding something to give me more than a very brief (a few hours) respite,” wrote one shopper. “I wish I had found about this little gem years ago, but I’m thankful I finally found something to give me genuine relief!”

Before trying this tool, it’s best to ask your own doctor if it’s right for you, especially if you have any specific conditions, as it could create more pain if not used properly. There are also different types of foam density levels, ranging from low to high. You’ll want to ask a medical professional about using the right one.

If you get the green light to use a foam roller, it’s definitely a self-massaging option to consider — especially when you’re on a budget.
