Millions of people tuned in for the Vice Presidential Debate on Wednesday, October 7, including two former Vampire Diaries stars — and the two seemed to have sliiiightly different opinions about how it went.
Paul Wesley, AKA Stefan, and Matthew Davis, who played Alaric on the CW series, got into a bit of a, shall we say, discussion on Twitter about the debate and how it was handled. Though some of the tweets have been deleted since Tuesday, BuzzFeed has the receipts.
Apparently, Matthew had sent an initial tweet about Vice President Mike Pence, writing, “It’d be nice if the moderator would stop interrupting Pence and let him finish his point,” referencing the way Pence ran over his allotted time during the debate. Paul replied to said tweet, saying, “It would also be nice if pence answered the question he was originally asked rather than deflecting.”
Matthew then responded to his former cast mate, accusing him of voting for “criminals and losers” in the 2016 election. “Paul likes to vote for criminals and losers, just like he did in 2016,” he wrote. “Your opinion on the matter carries little weight as far as I’m concerned. Next.” Paul replied that he did not vote for Trump, and then made a joke referencing Matthew’s onscreen character. “Guys Alaric drank some vervain he’s losing it,” he wrote. Matthew apparently didn’t think the joke was all that funny, tweeting “Yawn,” and Paul again replied, saying, “Lighten up baby boy u know u miss me.”
Paul sent love via tweet by the end of the discussion, but Matthew took to Twitter on October 9 to share more about his political viewpoint. “For the record: I’m a social libertarian. Which means I don’t give a f*ck about what you do in your private time. So long as you don’t hurt others, It’s your life. Im also a free market fiscal conservative who wants more restrained spending from our government,” he tweeted. “I would rather not have to say any of this, but the hate I’ve been receiving for well over a year now has crossed a line I can no longer ignore.”
In conclusion, Twitter discourse continues to be almost as dramatic as an episode of Vampire Diaries.
