Netflix series Wednesday has been criticised after it was revealed Jenna Ortega had COVID while filming the showโs viral dance sequence.
In episode four, titled Woe What A Night, Wednesday (Ortega) and her fellow students attend Nevermore Academyโs annual RaveโN dance, where she performs a dance routine soundtracked by The Cramps single โGoo Goo Muckโ.
Speaking to NME, Ortega revealed she had COVID while filming the scene. โIโd gotten the song [โGoo Goo Muckโ] about a week before and I just pulled from whatever I couldโฆ itโs crazy because it was my first day with COVID so it was awful to film.
โYeah, I woke up and โ itโs weird, I never get sick and when I do itโs not very bad โ I had the body aches. I felt like Iโd been hit by a car and that a little goblin had been let loose in my throat and was scratching the walls of my oesophagus. They were giving me medicine between takes because we were waiting on the positive result.โ
She added: โI asked to redo it but we didnโt have time. I think I probably could have done it a bit betterโฆโ
MGM, the production company behind Wednesday, confirmed to NME via email that โstrict COVID protocols were followed and once the positive test was confirmed production removed Jenna from setโ.
Viewers have since criticised the showโs production for allowing Ortega to film the scene when she was showing symptoms. โThis is a bad thing right? We all agree that this is not some โpersevering through hardshipโ moment, its a why the fuck didnโt she get sent home, she could get horrendously sick or infect others kinda moment,โ one viewer wrote on Twitter.
Another added: โJenna Ortega filming that dance scene while she had COVID is not impressive, itโs horrible. Absolutely callous disregard for her co-workers.โ

Jenna Ortega having COVID on set and working unmasked around other unmasked performers is not a flex. She should not be praised for โworking while sick.โ
The above the line crew couldโve possibly disabled or killed someone for their irresponsibility.

jenna ortega filming a whole scene while waiting for her covid test results AND with obvious symptoms isnโt โprofessionalโ, itโs just completely irresponsible

In a four-star review of Wednesday, NME wrote: โIf thereโs one thing fans of The Addams Family should know before watching Netflix reboot Wednesday, itโs to expect the unexpected.
โYes, the look โ pigtails, pale skin, pinstripes โ is similar to the โ90s classic. Yes, she remains po-faced and prickly. Yes, itโs still set in a creepy mansion. But dip a toe beyond the first few episodes, and youโll find a very different Wednesday to the one weโve come to know.โ
