Zendaya Spoke to Timothée Chalamet About “Euphoria” Season 2

Zendaya has had a pretty big year — the actor won her first Emmy Award and broken records as the youngest Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Rue in Euphoria, filmed a movie under strict quarantine and social distancing standards, and got out the vote. She’s also getting ready for the (now delayed) release of her upcoming film adaptation of Dune, also starring her friend Timothée Chalamet, and the two stars chatted via phone for Elle to discuss everything that’s going on in the world of Zendaya.

The two discussed Z’s Emmy win, where she shared that she had no idea she was going to win and accepted her award from someone in a hazmat suit, but they also talked about what’s providing hope and joy in this up-and-down year. “At this moment in time, it is hard to find joy and beauty in things, and I really think that is important. Right now, we as Black people need to embrace joy and not let it be taken away from us,” she said.

For Zendaya, work helps her find the joy in life. “I experience moments of joy when I’m able to create art and be involved in projects that I connect to deeply, whether it be Euphoria or Malcolm & Marie, the movie I shot during quarantine with [Euphoria creator] Sam Levinson,” she said. “Another thing that gives me joy is seeing people’s responses to my work. With Euphoria, it’s been incredibly moving to see how people connected to what Sam has written. I’ve heard so many beautiful stories about addiction and recovery, and that brings me hope.”

Z also shared a bit about what’s to come for Euphoria season two. There are two “bridge” episodes debuting soon, with the first premiering on December 6, though the production of the series was pushed back due to COVID-19.

“I can’t really say too much about the in-between episodes, but I’m excited for people to see them,” Z teased. “We’re doing a little Christmas special to check in with everybody on Euphoria, until we can get back to [the full production], which probably won’t happen until after I get back from filming the next Spider-Man movie, which is pretty soon.”

Though Zendaya has a pretty busy schedule and has adapted to the new reality of COVID-19, that doesn’t mean she doesn’t miss her old life a bit, especially another thing that brings her joy: travel.

“We’re probably going to have a new normal to keep people safe and healthy, which I’m totally down for. I mean, I love traveling. I don’t feel super-safe traveling all over the place quite yet, but I can’t wait to get back to it,” she told Timothée. “I love being able to visit different places. I think that’s one of the beautiful parts of our job … Luckily I’ve been able to work, so I’m grateful for that, being able to work safely. I do miss being able to actually go to the movies. But you know what? All of that can wait.”

Thankfully, we’ll get more Zendaya on our screens sooner rather than later.
